Llanwenog Numbers Decline
15 January 2015

As predicted at the Society’s Annual General Meeting in November, the number of Llanwenog sheep has declined in recent years. This week, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust published its 2015 Watchlist . As the number of registered breeding ewes has fallen below 3000, the Llanwenog has returned to Category 5 (Minority) after successfully moving into Category 6 in 2008.
After a more thorough analysis of popuation trends this year, the RBST key message is that more work is required to ensure that native breed livestock populations survive in sufficient numbers to play their part in a sustainable future for UK farming.
This may prove to be good news for the Llanwenog: with possible grants from the Trust, eligiblity for entry into more show classes and incentive for new breeders wanting to help the rare breeds.
