Llanwenog Sheep Society in partnership with Bridgwater College in 2015
Our partnership with Bridgwater College has continued to develop during 2015. Once again we took the show stand to Lambing Funday in March. This now well established event attracts an increasing attendance each year and is an excellent opportunity to showcase both modern farming and our breed to the general public. The day culminated with the second award of the Trevor Kelland Memorial Bursary to Hannah Herriot and Charlotte Male, both second year Level Three students.
We now have their project reports. Although their projects compared fairly small groups of ewes, both demonstrated that Llanwenogs compete well with Texel cross ewes. Charlotte Male found that her group of Llanwenogs had a higher percentage of reared lambs than Texel crosses due to lower lamb losses. This result is very much in line with findings of previous years. Interestingly Hannah Herriot concluded that Llanwenogs were milkier and their lambs required less supplementary milk feeding in the immediate post lambing period.
We have recently learnt that Steve Jones, the farm manager is leaving the College at the end of September. Our thanks are due to him for enabling us to initiate this project and the subsequent help we have received from him. He has been an excellent host when we have visited and he has our best wishes for the future.
