As the Newsletter goes to print we must congratulated James and Sue Money-Kyrle, Ruardean on winning the Llanwenog Section at the RBST Show held on Sunday 20th June at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern.

ROYAL WELSH SMALLHOLDERS AND GARDEN FESTIVAL 2010.

The Smallholder and Garden Festival was another success for the Llanwenog Sheep Society when Gareth, Wendy and Iwan Evans Parcyrhos Flock took the Reserve Championship in the Rare Breeds Closewool Section with a home bred yearling ram. Results of the classes

The Society had further success at the Small Holder Show at Builth Wells when we were presented with a Welsh Crystal bowl for the Best Sheep Stand at the Show. What a great weekend.

RAM REGISTRATION 2010

As you are aware there will be no Ram Inspection centres for 2010. Rams registration forms will be accepted until WEDNESDAY 7th JULY 2010 with the correct information as stated on the registration form.

Register fee will be £20-00 per ram. If any rams have or may be entered in any Official Show and Sales they must be registered by the above date.

NO RAM REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.

All ram registration forms must be received through the post with the correct registered fee. A ram certificate will be issued for each ram.

Please keep in mind the breed type. See below.

Type of Excellence

Faults

Head

Fine and hornless.

Black and free from speckles.

A small tuft of wool on forehead. At times this tuft extends in a thin line to join neck wool immediately in front of ears, but a distinct break is preferable.

Excessive or dark wool on head.

Brown or white patches of hair on face.

Bad mouth with overshot or undershot jaw.

Definite horn on either sex

(scurf permissible).

Ears

Short and thin, set at elevated angle of about twenty (20) degrees.

Distance between ears comparatively narrow.

Very large and low set.

Body

Compact with a fairly short neck, well sprung of ribs, strong loin and full thighs.

Poor size or weight for age ratio.

Weak behind the shoulder.

Males – uneven or very small testicles.

Legs

Black and free from speckles.

Poor feet and low pasterns.

Legs crooked or turned in or out.

Excessive wool on legs and white spots of hair.

Wool

Rather short, dense and of fine texture, free from kemp and black fibres (broglo).

Weight of fleece – two to two and a half kilos (2- 2½ kilos).

Loose or open fleece.

Black or brown wool on body.

Tail

Docked, in line with the minimum specified in current Animal welfare Regulations.

Docked too short.

Black wool in stump of tail.

Weights

Although not mandatory, it is considered that the weights of rams at the time of registration should be:

Lambs 35kgs Yearlings 70kgs

  1. Application for registration of lambs and yearlings rams should be lodged with the Secretary on the appropriate form between 1st – 7th July and 1st – 7th September annually. No late applications will be entertained. (Forms will be sent out during June).
  2. The registration fee to be £20-00 per ram.

ROYAL WELSH SHOW MONDAY 19th JULY 2010.

The Llanwenog Classes will be at 9am this year. Judge for this year will be Keith Davies, Cefnystrad Flock. The Society’s stand will be in the NSA Building. If you are visiting the Show please remember to visit the stand. This would be very much appreciated by the Officials.

On Monday evening at 6.00p.m. the Society has arrange to meet on the stand for a social get together. Refreshments will be available on the stand

LLANWENOG SHEEP BREEDERS SUPPORT GROUP ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

SATURDAY 3rd JULY 2010 AT ST FAGANS, CARDIFF.

A kind invitation has been received to all members of the Society to join the Llanwenog Sheep Breeders Support Group for their Annual General Meeting and Visit held at St Fagans National History Museum Cardiff, CF5 6XB.

Directions – St Fagans is found 4 miles west of Cardiff City Centre, just off the A4232. ‘Musseum of Welsh Life’ is sign posted from the M4 J33.

Timetable for the Day:-

10.00am Arrive after 10am and enjoy the castle before the main events start (refreshments can be bought at the Cafe in the main entrance hall)

12.00pm Meet at Main Gate for Llanwenog Flock Visit with Emma Edwards, assistant Farm Manager.

1.00pm A Private Buffet Lunch in the Committee Room (see menu £17-00 includes VAT per person*) Lunch Menu – Chef’s selection of hand made sandwiches on traditional and continental breads, Roasted vegetable crostini, Caramelized red onion, spinach and feta tartlets, Rare roast Celtic Pride beef in a mini Yorkshire pudding, Lamb kofta with minted yoghurt dip, mini muffins.

(* the cost is more expensive that we would like but we have the benefit of a private room for our meeting and lunch will be provided by the exceptional quality in-house caterers)

2.00pm AGM & Election of Chairman and the Committee.

A coach has been arranged from Lampeter, Ceredigion. The coach will leave the Rookery Car Park, Lampeter at 8-30a.m. The cost per person will be between £10 - £15. (This depending on the number of people coming). Members who are interested in joining us on the coach to contact the Secretary as soon as possible.

RARE BREED SURVIVAL TRUST WATCH LIST 2010

The Rare Breed Survival Trust has just released the 2010 Watchlist of vulnerable breed in the UK. You will be delighted to know that the LLANWENOG together with the Black Welsh Mountain, Hebridean, Kerry Hill, Ryeland, Southdowns, Shetlands, South Wales Welsh Mountain and Wiltshire Horn have now moved off the Watch List and into Other Native Breeds with over 3000 breeding females.

RBST Native Breeds at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show Tuesday 7th & Wednesday 8th September 2010 NEC Birmingham.

RBST will be organising the Native Breeds Exhibition at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show on the above dates. Show schedules are available from the RBST website www.rbst.org.uk or by calling the RBST office on 0247669 6551.

Closing dates for entries are the 1st July 2010.
