July 2013 Newsletter

As the Newsletter goes to print we must congratulate Huw & Lynwen Jenkins who showed the champion in the Llanwenog Section at the RBST Show held on Sunday 16th June at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern. Congratulations also to Gareth & Wendy Evans (Parcyrhos) who won the Breed Champion at the RWAS Spring Festival.  Similarly congratulations to Jill Bennett (Tallentire) and Margaret Brain (Whiteparish) who were placed across several classes at the Bath & West, including Margaret Brain receiving Reserve Champion in the Ewe and Lambs Class.  Our youngest Member Miss Aggie Jones (Neadon Flock, came 3rd in the Any Other Native Breed class at the Devon County Show.  It really is good news to see Llanwenog sheep doing so well at shows and amongst the prize winners all across the UK.

Take a look at the Facebook page ‘Llanwenog Sheep’, courtesy of Aggie Jones.

It is also worth mentioning the new show stand that ‘premiered’ at the Smallholders, and was placed received a 2nd in the Best Stand category.  We hope to see plenty of you at the shows this year.

This year there is an additional trophy on offer for showing namely the Whiteparish Perpetual Trophy presented by our president Mrs. M. Brain. It will be awarded to the paid up member gaining the most points in the Open/Mixed classes at shows. Everyone showing in these classes is encouraged to send in their show results to the society & the trophy will be presented at the annual dinner.

The society would like to send their condolences to the family of the late Mr J E White who passed away recently. Mr White affectionately known by many as Ginger White, was a Life Member of the society and was a real ambassador for the breed including presenting the Carrobian cup to the society.

NO RAM REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE FOR THIS PURPOSE.

All ram registration forms must be received through the post with the correct registration fee.  A ram certificate will be issued for each ram. Please bear in mind the breed type.

RAM AMNESTY

I have recently received various requests for lost or non-received ram registrations & I am keen to ensure I am completely up to date on all areas of Ram registrations.  Therefore, in addition to the ram registration deadline of 7 July 2013, please can you send me any requests for duplicates, change of ownerships or non-received certificates. Thank-you.

EWE LAMB REGISTER 2012

Unfortunately this year some mistakes have become apparent in the 2012 ewe lamb register particularly in the date of birth & birth type columns. A corrected version will be compiled which will be put on the website & sent to any member requesting a corrected version. The Society apologises for this & having considered the circumstances believe this is the best solution. Any member finding any other errors should notify the secretary.

ROYAL WELSH SHOW 22nd – 25th JULY 2013.

This year the Llanwenog Classes will be judged at 9am in Rings 2&4 on TUESDAY 23rd July rather than on the traditional Monday.  Our judge will be Mr Arfon Williams (Pentre). The Society’s new stand complete with a display of livestock will be in the NSA Building & if you are visiting the Show please remember to visit the stand which would be very much appreciated by the Officials.

The committee would very much appreciate offers of help on the stand even for short periods of time & anyone able to help please contact the Secretary. Anyone doing so is asked to fill in a Canal y Cardi time sheet which contributes to our match funding required by the scheme.

Please note that this year the working committee have decided NOT to host a social event on the Monday evening of the show.

The Intergroup Championship this year is to be judged by Mr David Pittendreigh (Coed-y-Foel).

All entry forms are available on the website or contact the Secretary for a paper copy.

Friday 26th July 2013 is the closing date for entries (Friday after the Royal Welsh). Please be prompt as the draw for the show and sale order is that weekend.

FLOCK COMPETITION

This year’s flock competition will be judged by Mr Elfyn Morgans (Glwydwern Flock).  Elfyn has requested that a selection of the flock and the rams are penned and the remainder are in a nearby paddock.  More information will follow in the next newsletter.

If you would like to enter, please download a form from the website or contact the secretary. Entry costs £5 per flock.

Flocks will be judged on Type, Conformation, Uniformity and Management/Suitability.

ANNUAL ELECTIONS TO WORKING COMMITTEE

Each year four committee members retire by rotation which this year are H. Evans, I.Lloyd, M.Brain & P Thornely. Philip Thornely and Ifonwy Lloyd have both indicated that they do not intend to stand for re-election.  We would like to thank them both for their long, dedicated and loyal service within the committee. Philip Thornely has been on the committee for 30 years and Ifonwy Lloyd for longer & we thank them both for their contribution to the society.

The society welcomes new nominations for the committee, to help the sheep breed, that we all love thrive & progress.

Anyone wishing to stand for election (or re-election) should request a form from the secretary to be completed with a proposer & seconder.  The deadline for nomination forms is 7th September 2013. This date allows for any necessary arrangements for voting by proxy for the AGM.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION 2013

This year we had another great selection of photos for the calendar, which once again sold out with the diversity of pictures providing a stunning product.

This year we are keen to continue this and will use the same categories as last year. Each category winner will go forward to be judged for the ‘Llanwenog Photograph of the Year 2013’.

The categories are:

LLANWENOGS THROUGH THE SEASONS: Llanwenog sheep in all weathers.

FLOCKS IN THE FIELD: Capture the very essence of the ‘Flock’

TUPPING TIME: Catching the mood and atmosphere of these Autumn months.

LAMBING TIME: Demonstrating the fun and life of Spring and new-born lambs

SHOW TIME LLANWENOG: Primed and ready for show Llanwenogs.

Photographs can only be accepted by jpg, gif or bmp (a resolution of 300ppi gives optimum reproduction).  Also please try and use landscape mode as this provides a better image when used on the calendar.

Please clearly mark the category entered and please give details of the sheep and the owners flock. In entering, the photographer gives permission for the Society to use the photograph for Society publicity, calendar and web site. This we hope will provide publicity for your flock and refresh and increase the range of photographs to publicise the breed.
