RWAS Winter Fair 2014

Winter Fair 14 Greens

An entry of ten pairs of Llanwenog lambs from eight exhibitors were forward at the 25th Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Winter Fair held at Builth Wells on 1st & 2nd December. Judged by Malcolm Stewart from Melrose in Scotland, John and Meinir Green won the class with a fine pair of homebred ewe lambs ahead of a pair from Huw and Lynwen Jenkins.

The first prize winners went forward to the Lowland Section Championship. Whilst not emulating last years success by Arfon & Rhian Williams, they were pulled in third behind the Southdown and Suffolk. Another excellent result for the breed at this prestigious event claimed to be the finest Primestock Show in Europe, which attracted a record entry of 421 pair of lambs.

Elsewhere at the show, Gareth & Wendy Evans (Parcyrhos) won the class for any other Lowland breeds with a pair of Shropshire lambs. Elfyn & Sharon Morgans (Glwydwern) showed a particularly nice homebred Limousin X heifer calf in the Baby Beef Section. It was awarded a 2nd prize and went on to sell well.

Brian Williams (Red Burrow) & Maggie Wilson (Pessall) showed just how well the Llanwenog can do in mixed breed classes. Brian's single entry - a yearling ewe - stood out from the crowd. She came top of a class of 16 including Ryeland, Kerry Hill, Cheviot & Dorset Down and was judged 'Any Other Native Breeds' Reserve Champion. Maggie's ewe was in the final six line up. Maggie was also showing South Downs and took both 2nd and 3rd place in the Ram Classes.

Bath & West Show – (Saturday Sheep) 31 May

Two Llanwenog Breeders exhibited in the Heath, Hill & Upland Breeds Section. These classes attract Badger face, Black Welsh Mountain, Exmoor Horn and Herdwicks ... a fair challenge for the judge, Johnathan Crump, a fellow Llanwenog Breeder (Burfords Flock). He awarded Margaret Brain – Whiteparish Flock – a 1st in the Ewe & lambs class. This 5 yr old ewe has won this class for three years in a row! Jill Bennett – Tallantire Flock – achieved 2nd in the Ram and 2nd in the Ewe & lambs class.

Staffordshire County Show - 28/29 May

With English breeders scattered across the country, the local shows provide a great showcase and the breed tends to fare well in mixed classes of other native breeds. This show attracts large class sizes; the Llanwenog is eligible for the 'Other Rare & Minority Native Breed' section.

Mr Douwe Koop (Throstles Nest Flock) repeated his excellent performance in the Ram Lamb Class taking the Rare & Minority Native Breed Ram Lamb Cup for the third year in a row.

Maggie Wilson (Pessall Flock) came 2nd in the Ram class to the Hill Radnor Section Champion
