Once again it’s time to prepare the Annual Flock Book. Officials of the Society urge you to return the Flock Return Form (green in colour) this is to enable us to keep the records up to date as information is requested each year by the RBST. Please ensure you complete the form and return to the Secretary, copies also on website.
CLOSING DATE IS 22nd SEPTEMBER 2011.
THE REASONS BEHIND FLOCK RETURNS by Margaret Brain, Whiteparish.
This subject surfaces more often in Committee meetings than any other, and the fact that so many returns are not forthcoming. Indeed, a lot of the Secretary’s time is spent chasing them. Members might consider the reasons why this is so important.
For anyone interested in breeding Llanwenog sheep the Flock Book contains (or should) essential information on the makeup of flocks entered in it. This is vital with a breed which does not have a very broad gene base.
For a variety of reasons some Members cannot get to either Official Sale. So, particularly when choosing a new ram, they turn to the Flock Book to see who is near to them and has a bloodline to suit. This is especially important now, as with the high cost of fuel, any journey has to be cost effective.
But, it is very thought provoking, having found a flock near enough to consider, to find there is no information available-not to mention the breeder losing a sale. Long established Members may be able to get round this but it is not so simple for our newer and far flung Members.
One suggestion has been that Area Reps could gently remind those whose return is not forth coming – it is easy to forget to fill in the forms. Hopefully, we might have a year when ALL our members are represented and our Flock Book will be doubly valuable.
