March 2012 Newsletter

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2012 which proudly displays our newly developed logo which will be progressively added to all society printed material over the coming months.

The newly established Llanwenog flock in partnership with Bridgwater College is progressing well & has been scanned to lamb at 178%. The farm manager Mr. Steve Jones considers this a good result in view of the fact that the ewes have not been on the farm for a full year & came from contrasting backgrounds. The flock is now housed on a TMR of maize & grass silage with added blend, caustic treated grain & straw to aid cudding. The ewes look extremely well & start to lamb around March 17th.

A further collaboration is planned with Ceredigion County Council to whom an application for funding has been made with the help of Gwenfair Owen from the council. If this is successful it will enable the society to develop its marketing strategy & improve its administrative procedures to reduce costs & reduce the burden on our secretary & treasurer. Our thanks go to Richard Edwards, Ernie Lewis, Philip Thornely & Emily Addis for pursuing this.

All these developments will strengthen our marketing efforts & I urge all members of the Society to actively support them. May I also draw your attention to the Society flock visit to Bridgwater College in May details of which appear later in this newsletter. Finally can I ask members wherever possible to accept communication by email & access forms etc. from the website. This considerably reduces our costs & administrative burden.

I cannot end this newsletter without thanking all members who actively support the society in so many ways & without whom it would not succeed.

With best wishes for the coming season,

Lawrence Jones (Chairman).

It would also be of great help if your LLANWENOG SHEEP SOCIETY FLOCK NUMBER could be included on the tags as well as your UK flock number e.g.

UK123456 666 P012.

Please bear in mind the new double tagging regulations when ordering your ear tags.

There is an opportunity for members to place an advert on the Society’s website advertising their flock and stock for sale at any time of the year. The cost of this will be as follows :-

£20.00 per year to advertise flocks.

£5.00 to advertise stock for sale up to 3 months.

If you wish to advertise your flock or stock please contact the Treasurer: Lynwen Jenkins on 01570 434 676 or e-mail [email protected]

Thank you to everyone who agreed to have their names and addresses published on the website. This has allowed us to develop a new feature: the members’ directory. We hope that this will help prospective new breeders locate their nearest flock as well as act as an easy reference point for members who are electronically inclined. If you have a moment please go on and look at this service and do let us know if your details change or need modifying. We are planning to keep adding features to the website and will keep you up to date in future newsletters.

E- MAIL Addresses

If you would like to receive your newsletters and general correspondence by e-mail please send your details to [email protected],as not only will you receive all your news and updates 1st but it saves paper and postage costs.

At the last Working Committee it was decided that in order to improve pedigree information available:

Ram Lambs can only be registered if from a registered ewe.

This will be introduced over time and will be initiated for Rams born from Ewes with an S (year 2012) tag onwards. Therefore any ewe lambs born this year will need to be registered if you intend to breed and register subsequent male progeny.

Following a year of changes in the show & sales, it has been agreed that the changes that were made to the Llanybydder Show & Sale, such as the use of entry fee instead of a levy and the layout of the pens etc will carried over for future sales.

Unfortunately due to lack of support during previous years the Official Show & Sale will not be held this year in Worcester.

This year we will not automatically send out Show & Sale Catalogues to every society member. Instead anyone who entered sheep in the sale and anyone who purchased sheep in the last 2 seasons will be sent a catalogue. In addition to this, entrants for this year’s sale and Show Officials will automatically receive a copy. Copies will also be available on request prior to the sale & will be available at the sale as well as being published on the website.

In order to streamline administration and ensure timely delivery of the AGM statutory information, it has been proposed to split the AGM information from the flock book. Therefore the AGM information will be sent in October and the Flock book will be sent in the following February. This will enable the flock book to be completed with up to date information arising from the AGM and accurate data for the year ahead. There will be more details available in subsequent newsletters.

Saturday 3rd November 2012.ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND DINNER. This year we are pleased to announce that we have secured the same venue as last year that proved so popular: Ty Glyn, Ciliau Aeron. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Layland Branfield from Princetown, Devon

This year we had another great selection of photos for the calendar and were pleased to be able to represent all entrants. Another first - the calendar sold out and a re-print was needed!! I will give everyone plenty of time to get your orders in early to avoid disappointment.

This year we are keen to receive an even more diverse selection, therefore, we would like to open up several new categories, each category winner will go forward to win the ‘Llanwenog Photograph of the Year 2012’. The Categories are:

LLANWENOG THROUGH THE SEASONS: Llanwenog sheep in all weathers.

FLOCKS IN THE FIELD: Capture the very essence of the ‘Flock’

TUPPING TIME: Catching the mood and atmosphere of these Autumn months.

LAMBING TIME: Demonstrating the fun and life of Spring and newborn lambs

SHOW TIME LLANWENOG: Primed and ready for show Llanwenogs.

We are very keen to have photographs that showcase the breed characteristics, such as good mothering, produces twins, sturdy & lively lambs, docile and ‘smart’ looking sheep and are really keen to see good composition and some ‘fun’ photos too…. So get snapping!

Photographs can be submitted by post or ideally by email as jpg, gif or bmp (a resolution of 300ppi gives optimum reproduction).

Please clearly mark the category entered and please give details of the sheep and the owners flock. In entering, the photographer gives permission for the Society to use the photograph for Society publicity, calendar and web site. This we hope will provide publicity for your flock and refresh and increase the range of photographs to publicise the breed.
